FAQs
What does a prenatal appointment look like?
A typical prenatal appointment lasts 45-60 minutes and will take place in Chloe’s office, except for the 36 week home visit. The midwife will take time to answer questions and provide information on recommended procedures. We may do labs, talk about your hopes for your birth, or discuss common discomforts you are experiencing. Every visit will include vitals on mom and going over specific questions to catch any symptom that may indicate that your pregnancy is straying from normal. We will discuss nutrition, hydration, exercise, and lifestyle modifications as preventative measures to keep this from happening. Every visit will also include an evaluation for baby - palpating your belly to assess baby’s growth and position and listening to baby’s heart. The basic care schedule is visits at 12, 17, 21, 26, 29, 32, 34, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, and 43 weeks.
In the postpartum, the basic care schedule is a home visits at 24-48 hours, a home visit at 3-5 days, and office visits at 2 and 6 weeks, or more as needed.
Who can have a home birth?
Home birth is appropriate for low risk pregnancies. Pregnant women who have chronic hypertension, diabetes, or any other preexisting condition that could effect their pregnancy are not appropriate candidates for home birth. At your initial consult, we will complete a risk assessment to get a better idea of whether home birth is appropriate for you, so if you are unsure about your situation, reach out!
Is home birth safe?
Research shows that birth at home with a skilled provider for low risk women is as safe as or safer than birth in the hospital. Midwives are trained to recognize and respond to emergencies and high risk situations. Additionally, your midwife will recommend transfer if your labor and birth falls out of the scope of low risk. Home birth is the goal and we will work towards that goal together, but if you or baby will be safer in the hospital, that will be communicated to you. It is also important for you to recognize that no one can guarantee your safety or that of your baby’s whether you give birth at home or the hospital.
Can I have a home birth if I have had a c-section?
Oftentimes, yes. VBACs, first time moms, twins and breech can all be appropriate for care. We will discuss your unique situation to be sure.
Who will be at my birth?
The midwife and 1-2 assistants will be present at your birth. Additionally, anyone you want to invite. However, most women labor best with less people.
Do you take insurance?
We can provide an itemized bill to you that you can submit to your insurance company. Many insurance companies will not cover a home birth, but you can definitely try and see if they will cover anything. You will still be responsible for the full fee regardless of if or when your insurance company reimburses you.
Do you offer discounts?
Yes! You can receive a $200 discount if you pay in full by 20 weeks.
