Near the end of the term, I began a placement at a high volume birth center to get more practice managing birth and complications which helped boost my proficiency and confidence.

This was my final term of phase 2. I began working with a second preceptor with a totally different style and began putting more thought towards how I want to practice. Reflection on Term
This term, I began to move more into the birth assistant role. I attended 6 births and had my busiest birth month yet as 5 of those were in March! Most of them were as the sole assistant to a midwife. I was able to assist at a few Amish births, as well, which was very exciting for me because I hope to support the Amish community when I become a midwife. I also began to search for a preceptor and was able to connect with a midwife and start that relationship. I am excited to begin learning hands-on skills from her! Finally, this term I spent a lot of time preparing to assess and officially move into phase 2.

Reflection on Term
This term really challenged me to grow outside of my comfort zone. I had my first experience of practicing and gaining clinical skills, such as IV placement. I learned, through mt experiences, that I cannot become a midwife and practice in a void. Relying on others, especially other midwives, is necessary for back-up, skill-sharing and practicing, and second opinions. If I become a midwife, it will be in no small part due to the support I receive from my local birthworker community.

Personal Goals
Spend 15 minutes in prayer every morning, afternoon, and evening
Staying connected to God every day is very important to me. Praying each day ensures that I am maintaining a relationship with Him. This will bring me peace and help guide me.
Take a walk or lift weights 3 times a week
It is so easy to forget about my physical and mental health. Moving my body, especially outside, is an essential self-care practice for me. It is also the best way to spend quality time with my outdoorsy family!
Read one novel each term
Reading novels for fun is my favorite way to relax and unwind. I tend to forget about this in favor of pushing forward on the next task. Hopefully committing to one book a term will help me make reading a priority.
Books I've read:
War and Peace - Fall 2025
Middlemarch and North and South - Summer 2025
The Idiot - Winter 2025
The Grapes of Wrath and The Power and The Glory - Fall 2024
Unbroken - Summer 2024
Gone with the Wind - Winter 2024
Ida Elisabeth - Fall 2023
I enjoy the simple things in life. Being outside - whether on a walk or hike, or in my own little backyard cultivating my cut flower garden while my husband tends to the vegetables - is where I find peace and joy. I also love to read novels, especially classics, and especially Russian classics and tragedies. I enjoy knitting and sewing for my family, singing, and lifting weights.
Other than being outside together, my family's favorite pastime is exploring the world through travel. In the past 7 years, we have visited Ireland, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Portugal, Yellowstone National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, Badlands National Park, Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, the Adirondacks, the Outer Banks, Seattle, NYC, White Sands National Park, McDonald Observatory, and many more cities and states around the country.
